Invisalign: Straight Teeth Keep You Healthy

Straight teeth aren’t just pleasant to look at but also help keep you and your mouth healthy. That’s why dental products such as Invisalign are really important. There is research linking periodontal disease and several other health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or stroke. The mouth is the gateway to the body – it is almost always your first line of defense – your oral health really does matter!

Crowded teeth have a higher likelihood of decay/cavities since they are the hardest to keep clean. Also, when teeth are not properly aligned, bite forces are not distributed and chipping, fracturing and eventual tooth loss are likely to occur from the resulting trauma. This can lead to more dental work down the road – which can be both costly and uncomfortable. Remember, teeth that are properly aligned have less incidence of decay and are far healthier.

When teeth are crowded, the gums can become red, swollen and painful. This condition can lead to bone loss as well. This condition is known as periodontal or gum disease and is a result of buildup of plaque bacteria. The same can be said for teeth that are too far apart – food can get impacted deep in between the teeth and cause damage to your gums. Teeth that are properly aligned give the gums less opportunity for periodontal disease and are healthier.

So if you have ever thought about “straightening your teeth,” you are doing so much more than just gaining a “better smile.” Your teeth will likely need less dental work over the years as they are easier to keep clean and will not suffer trauma from misalignment. Your gums will be healthier as they are more easy to maintain and your health may benefit as well.
