Can Thyroid Medication Affect Your Dental Health?

Thyroid disorders and thyroid medications can both affect your oral health. If you have an underactive thyroid or take drugs like levothyroxine, here’s what you need to know.

Can Thyroid Medication Affect Your Dental Health?

Your thyroid gland is small but mighty. It controls your metabolism and regulates your hormones. But when those hormone levels get out too high or low, your oral health can take a hit. And some thyroid medications can affect your oral health as well.

The most common thyroid problem is hypothyroidism, when the gland has abnormally low activity. Hypothyroidism can increase the risk of gum disease, slow healing after dental work, and cause chronic dry mouth. In children, hypothyroidism can also slow dental development.

About 5% of Americans have hypothyroidism. That number might seem small, but it represents millions of people who need to pay extra attention to their oral health. Thyroid disorders are also common during pregnancy, affecting about 2.5% of pregnant women.

How Thyroid Medication Can Impact Your Teeth and Gums

The connection between thyroid medication and dental health goes beyond side effects. Gum disease will progress faster, and your immune system will struggle to fight off oral infections when you cannot control your thyroid disorder.

Fortunately, most people see improvements in their oral health once their thyroid hormones are balanced. But during the adjustment period, you may notice more plaque and tartar buildup, gum inflammation, and slower healing.

Some thyroid medications are not compatible with dental treatments that need anesthesia and healing. Always tell your dentist about your thyroid condition and any medications you’re taking, because some dental treatments should not be performed.

Levothyroxine Dental Implications: What You Need to Know

Doctors often prescribe levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. This synthetic hormone helps to restore normal metabolism levels. However, like many drugs, it can have an adverse effect on your dental health.

Taking Levothyroxine can cause:

  • Dry mouth (which makes cavities more likely)
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Changes in your taste buds
  • Shifts in bone density that affect your jaw

But taking thyroid medication doesn’t mean you will always have dental problems. These side effects often come from your body adjusting to varying hormone levels, not necessarily from the medication itself. With a little awareness and the right dental care, you can keep your teeth and gums in great shape while managing your hormone levels.
