08 Jun Parent Involvement in Children’s Success in Prescott
Most people would agree that a child’s future success begins at home. This success can be measured in a number of ways, including graduating from college, landing a well-paying job, or winning a trophy for athleticism. Whatever your definition of success, children tend to have higher success rates in life if their parents support and encourage them (Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, 2002). At Prescott Dentistry, we value the success of children in our community, this is one reason we’d like to share a little about the importance of parental involvement in a child’s success in Prescott.
We think of great parents as rock stars and heroes because of their parenting skills. But even the best Moms or Dads could use a little help in creating routines and behaviors that encourage their children to be successful. Here are a few tips for the wonderful parents out there that are looking for new ways to inspire successful behaviors in their children:
- Create a Routine. Children thrive in structure. While every family has their own take on what that structure looks like, sticking to a consistent routine each day will help children stay on task and complete assignments. Perhaps while you pack their school lunch, your child has to dress themselves and make their bed before coming downstairs for breakfast. Or, maybe structure is checking that all assignments are complete at a certain time each evening. Whatever your routine, having distinct tasks they must complete on schedule each day helps to keep them on task and makes them more cognizant of due dates on assignments in school.
- Form Healthy Habits. From serving nutritional meals to promoting a bedtime that allows for plenty of sleep so they’re rested the next day, it’s important to encourage good behavior and healthy routines. Participating in sports groups after school is another healthy activity that helps children to get their daily exercise and is shown to improve a child’s focus in school.
- Create A Special Study Place. This area should be quiet and free of distractions, meaning no TV in the background, or any interruptions while studying. Designating a quiet place to study and a designated time for homework means students will develop a healthy routine and will have a habitual place in the home to focus on their work.
- Be a Good Influence. You are your child’s biggest role model! When they see that you are reading books or eating healthy foods, they are influenced to model the same behavior. Showing children that adults read inspires them to read for fun, and not just for school work. On a similar note, seeing you consume healthy snacks like fruits or vegetables will make them less likely to indulge in foods that aren’t good for their physical or mental health.
By being a good influence and teaching children early on about the importance of education, you can help your children do their best in school. It’s okay to expect success from your kids, as long you give them the proper foundation and tools to achieve it. Good behaviors and habits in this aspect of life will also engender good habits in other areas of life that are outside of education. Taking care of your own dental hygiene by brushing, flossing, and scheduling regular dental cleanings, will show your children how important it is to keep up with their own health. We hope these tips will encourage parental involvement in children’s success in Prescott, for a brighter, healthier future generation.
