How To Use a Waterpik Flosser and Other Common Questions
Do you floss every day? Flossing is an important part of keeping your gums and teeth healthy as it helps prevent plaque from building under the gum line. According to a 2014 survey, only 41% of Americans floss every day, and 20% don’t floss at all. Some people think it is too painful and others just forget. Did you know there is another way to clean between your teeth besides traditional flossing? It’s called a Waterpik flosser. In this article, we discuss what a Waterpik flosser is and how to use a Waterpik, as well as other common questions.
What is a Waterpik Flosser?
A Waterpik is a specific brand of water flosser. In general, water flossers are a handheld device, similar to an electric toothbrush, that use a stream of pressurized water to clean between your teeth and under the gumline.
Why use a Waterpik flosser instead of traditional floss?
Flossing with a standard dental floss is still considered to be the most effective way to keep plaque from building up. Using a water flosser can be a good option if you find traditional flossing painful or have trouble flossing by hand due to health issues like arthritis. It is also a good alternative for those who have had dental work like braces or bridges that make traditional flossing difficult.
How Do You Use a Waterpik Flosser?
There are many varieties of water flossers available today and they all vary slightly in their use, but you should follow these general steps:
- Fill the reservoir with water and put it on the base.
- Select a tip and attach it to the handle.
- Select a pressure setting.
- Place the tip in your mouth.
- It is best to aim the tip at your gum line.
- Press the power button to turn the unit on and close lips to prevent splashing.
- Be sure to lean over the sink and let the water flow from your mouth into the sink.
- Start with the back of your teeth and work towards the front of your teeth.
