Scenic Hikes Near Prescott, Arizona

Prescott sits at about 5,400 feet of elevation, which gives it something that most of Arizona doesn’t have: cool mornings and clean mountain air. And with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside and explore.

There are many trails in Prescott that are perfect people who want to enjoy an easy hike without any punishing terrain. And whether you prefer a lakeside walk or a gentle loop through some shady Ponderosa pines, there’s always a view worth lacing up your shoes for. Here’s our list of some of the best scenic hikes nearby.

Four Easy Hiking Trails in Prescott Worth Your Time

1. Peavine Trail at Watson Lake

This is one of the most beloved trails in the area. The Peavine follows an old railroad bed along the southwestern edge of Watson Lake, which means it’s flat, wide, and well-maintained. The views of the pink Granite Dells rising straight out of the water are striking, especially in the morning.

You can walk as far as you like and turn around whenever you want. Benches are placed along the way, restrooms are available at the trailhead off Sundog Ranch Road, and an easily accessible parking lot in the lot with a small daily parking fee.

2. Goldwater Lake Shore Trail

Goldwater Lake sits tucked into a pine forest about four miles south of downtown Prescott. The shore trail is easy, short, and lovely, with benches along the water and a fishing pier nearby. There’s accessible parking and a small weekday parking fee, with free parking on Wednesdays. It’s a genuinely peaceful spot.

3. Lynx Lake Loop Trail

The west side of this 2.7-mile trail is paved, and there is very little elevation gain, making it one of the smoother options in the area. It loops around the lake through ponderosa pine and juniper, with lake views at several points. Bald eagles nest nearby seasonally, and the birdwatching here is excellent. There’s a day-use fee to park.

4. Willow Lake West Loop

Just west of Watson Lake, the Willow Lake West Loop is an easy 1.2-mile route with gentle terrain and nice views of the water framed by rocky formations. The area is a designated Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society, so bring binoculars if that interests you. The parking lot has accessible spaces and restrooms nearby.

Wheelchair Accessible Trails in Prescott

Prescott has made a lot of progress when it comes to trail accessibility. Our local ADA-compliant trails include the paved west shore of Lynx Lake (mentioned above) as well as a loop trail at the Highlands Center for Natural History with hard-packed surfaces. Watson Lake and Goldwater Lake both have designated accessible parking spaces and restroom facilities.

If you’re visiting with mobility equipment, it’s worth checking current trail conditions ahead of time since unpaved surfaces can change with the weather.

Why Getting Outside Matters

Walking in nature does a lot more good than burning a few calories. Research consistently shows that time outdoors reduces stress hormones, lowers blood pressure, and supports better immune function. At elevation, with clean air and the kind of quiet Prescott’s trails usually have, those effects are real.

A few practical tips for hiking in Arizona:

  • Go early in the day, especially in summer. Mornings are cooler and less crowded.
  • Bring more water than you think you need. Dehydration and heat stroke can easily sneak up on you when you’re hiking outdoors, so take frequent breaks to hydrate..
  • Always wear sunscreen and a hat regardless of the time or day or temperature. Higher elevation means greater UV exposure.
  • Hike at your own pace. If you feel tired, stop and rest. There’s no shame in turning back if today is not your day.
