09 Dec Biomimetic Dentistry Advances Continue
We’ve discussed the merits of Biomimetic Dentistry at lengths on this blog, however, the beauty of science and medicine is that newer and better advancements are always occurring. Biomimetic Dentistry seeks to provide a better and more natural way of oral care by mimicking nature. Though, a Harvard-led team may have taken this even one step further.
This team is the first to demonstrate the use of low-power light to stimulate stem cells in the body to regenerate tissue. Potential applications include bone regeneration, wound healing, and specific to dentistry, this low-power laser can trigger stem cells to form dentin which makes up the bulk of teeth.
The beauty of this new technology is that this treatment does not include introducing anything new to the body, it uses the stem cells already present in the body. It would be quite the advancement if one were able to regenerate teeth instead of replacing them altogether. The team aims to take this work to human clinical trials. You can read more details on the study here, and in the mean time, feel free to contact your local dentist in Prescott, AZ about what current technologies biomimetic dentistry entails.
