29 Jul What Makes Holistic Dentistry Different?
Every holistic dental practice has its own unique approach. For some, it means using non-toxic materials and natural remedies. For others, it means providing dental treatment that takes a person’s physical and mental health into consideration as well. But in general, holistic dentistry focuses on preventing dental problems rather than simply offering treatment.
For example, at Prescott Dentistry, our mission is to provide preventive dental care in a healing environment, using biomimetic principles that result in lifelong oral health. If you’re interested in going to a holistic dentist, we explain more about what makes our practice different below.
How Is Holistic Dentistry Different?
Prescott Dentistry is not your typical drill-and-fill dentist. In fact, we do our best to avoid invasive procedures altogether, and try to help our patients prevent dental problems whenever we can. Plus, our office environment is calm and restorative, because we don’t want our patients to have any anxiety about visiting the dentist.
Here are just a few of the things that make our practice different:
- Biomimetic materials
- Fluoride alternatives
- Amalgam filling removal
- Focus on prevention
- Natural remedies
- Nutrition and lifestyle
- Healing, relaxing atmosphere
Biomimetic Materials
No silver fillings here! We only use dental materials that are biologically compatible and good for your long-term health. In fact, if you do have silver (mercury amalgam) fillings, we can safely remove them and replace them with non-toxic, biomimetic fillings.
We also offer fluoride alternatives and natural remedies to our patients who request them. For example, we might suggest trying massage or acupuncture to relieve pain from TMJ disorders. Or if you want to add another preventive step to your daily oral care routine, we might recommend oil pulling.
Nutrition and Lifestyle
As holistic dentists, we recognize a strong correlation between diet and dental health. The things you eat and drink have a big impact on the health of your teeth and gums—positive or otherwise. That’s why making careful choices can significantly improve your dental health. For example, switching from coffee to green tea, replacing sugar with stevia, or getting enough of the right vitamins can make a big difference.
We also take lifestyle factors like special diets and your daily habits into consideration. Things like finding the right time of day to brush your teeth or finding ways to reduce stress can help you prevent many dental problems.
Prevention and Wellness
When we talk about prevention, it’s because we have your long-term health in mind. Your dental health, physical health, and mental health are all interrelated, and they all affect each other.
For example, if you have a chronic illness like diabetes or arthritis, you also have a much higher risk of gum disease. Or, if you suffer from anxiety, you might avoid going to the dentist for regular cleanings and exams.
To us, holistic dentistry means providing dental care that’s good for your physical health and your mental wellbeing, too. That’s why we offer extras like warm neck pillows to make you more comfortable, and why we do all we can to establish a comfortable, healing environment.
