Why You Need to Keep Wearing Your Retainers After You Get Invisalign

Invisalign treatments are not permanent. Without your retainers, your teeth will try to revert back to their original positions, and all your hard work will be lost.

Why You Need to Keep Wearing Your Retainers After You Get Invisalign

You’ve finally finished your Invisalign treatment, and your smile looks amazing. No more crooked teeth; only straight pearly whites in your pictures! So why do you need to keep wearing retainers, even though your teeth look perfect?

Brace yourself, because the truth is that your last aligner tray isn’t actually the finish line. Without your retainers, your teeth will try to revert back to their original positions, and all that hard work will be lost.

But Isn’t Invisalign Permanent?

No orthodontic treatment lasts forever without retention. After Invisalign moves your teeth into their new positions, the bone and soft tissue around them need time to settle into place. That is why you need a retaining device to keep your teeth in line.

As you age, your jaw structure naturally changes. For instance, the wisdom teeth coming in can shift the new alignment. Daily pressure from your cheeks, tongue, and lips and conditions like bruxism (teeth grinding) can also affect the new placement.

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, your teeth actually want to drift back to where they started; it’s called orthodontic relapse, and it’s completely normal. Wearing a retainer is the easiest way to prevent this effect.

How Long Does Invisalign Last Without Retainers?

Orthodontic relapse can happen any time after treatment, from weeks to years later. That first year after Invisalign is when your teeth are most vulnerable to shifting. Wearing your retainers exactly as prescribed is absolutely non-negotiable. Without retainers, tooth movement isn’t a question of “if,” but “when” and “how much.”

If you don’t wear your retainers, your teeth can start moving within weeks. Some people spot noticeable changes after a few months, and for others it may take longer. It’s okay if you forget once in a while, but don’t make it a habit.

How Often Do You Need to Wear Your Retainers After Invisalign?

At first, you’ll wear your retainers basically all the time for three to six months, about 22 hours a day. Just like your Invisalign trays, you’ll only take them out to eat and to brush your teeth. This retention phase allows the bone and soft tissue to lock into place. After this initial phase, you can transition to nighttime wear only.

Helpful retainer rules:

  • Follow your dentist’s instructions for daily wear
  • Keep your retainers clean so they don’t cause cavities
  • Store them in a case when they’re not in your mouth
  • Bring them to every dental appointment

What Happens If You Stop Wearing Your Retainers?

It is not easy to wear your retainers every single day and night. However, things can go sideways pretty quickly when you forget them for a night or two, or longer. If you take a break, you may notice an uncomfortable tightness when you try to put them back in again. That means your teeth have already started to move. If you catch this shift early enough, you can get your teeth back on track by wearing your retainers consistently again.

However, if your teeth have shifted significantly, your retainers might not fit anymore. At that point, you will have to schedule another round of treatment to correct what’s already been fixed once. That means you have to pay more money, spend more time at the dentist, and deal with the frustration of losing all the progress you achieved. Wearing your retainers every night is a small price to pay if you want your Invisalign treatment to last.
