Safe Amalgam Removal in Prescott

What is Amalgam?

All silver-colored fillings are known as amalgam fillings. They contain about 50% mercury, along with other heavy metals like silver, tin, and copper. According to the ADA, amalgam fillings are supposedly safe, and they are still being used in many countries, including parts of the US. But many countries have banned them because of their dangerous side effects. They actually release mercury constantly, and this is intensified while you are chewing or drinking hot liquids. Mercury is also released during the placement and removal of amalgam fillings. So it is imperative that you undergo a safe amalgam removal process, which we provide here at Prescott Dentistry.

What Effects Does Mercury Have on the Body?

Mercury can have devastating effects on the whole body, not just the mouth, because it gets into your bloodstream as it is released from the filling. It is absorbed into the brain, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, liver, and lungs. While different individuals experience different health problems related to mercury exposure, the following are some of the common conditions that can potentially be caused or worsened by dental mercury:

    • Allergies
    • Alzheimer’s Disease
    • Antibiotic resistance
    • Autism spectrum disorders
    • Autoimmune disorders
    • Cardiovascular problems
    • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
    • Hearing loss
    • Kidney disease
    • Mercury poisoning
    • Multiple Sclerosis
    • Parkinson’s disease
    • Periodontal disease
    • Psychological issues
    • Reproductive problems
    • Suicidal Ideations
    • Thyroiditis

What Is Involved With the Removal Process?

Before your safe amalgam removal, you may have to go through some detoxification, depending on the severity of your symptoms. It is also a good idea to avoid seafood for several weeks before the procedure, because of the mercury levels in fish.

Because mercury is released during the removal process, the procedure we follow is based on the one put forth by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicity, called SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique). Of course, individual needs will vary, so the specific steps may change to accommodate your unique requirements.

After the removal, we will give you a chlorella herbal rinse for detoxification. Chlorella is a kind of algae that is touted as a superfood by health practitioners all over the world. It will bind to any residual mercury in the mouth. We will also use supplements to aid in the detoxification process after removal. These may include things like garlic, glutathione (an antioxidant that your body naturally produces), cilantro, and vitamins C and E. All of these will help your body get rid of the mercury. We will also work with your naturopathic doctor if chelation therapy is appropriate for you. Chelation therapy uses an IV solution to absorb mercury and other heavy metals and remove them from your body.
