31 Jul How to Soothe Tooth Sensitivity Naturally
Tooth sensitivity might be fleeting, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a cause for concern. It could just be thinning enamel due to age, but it could also be due to gum disease or tooth decay. If you have sensitive teeth, you should see a dentist for a checkup. But in the meantime, there are a few natural remedies you can try. Here’s what our dentists recommend for soothing tooth sensitivity at home.
What’s Causing My Tooth Sensitivity?
Sensitive teeth are a very common problem, and most people will be affected at some point in their lives. If the pain is in one spot, it could be a cavity or a loose filling. If the chewing surfaces of your teeth are sensitive, it could be bruxism. It could even be due to a vitamin deficiency.
But the two main causes of sensitivity are thinning enamel and gum disease. As you age, the layer of enamel that protects your teeth grows thinner, and it gets easier for hot and cold temperatures to reach the nerves inside your teeth.
It’s also important to remember that there is no enamel below the gum line. If you have gum disease, your gums will “recede” and start to pull away from your teeth, exposing their vulnerable roots. This can cause sensitivity as well as cavities.
The most common causes of tooth sensitivity include:
- Thinning enamel
- Receding gums
- Cavities
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- Damaged restorations
- Over-the-counter whitening treatments
- Brushing too hard, or using an abrasive toothpaste
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- Vitamin deficiencies
Natural Remedies for Sensitive Teeth
If you’re looking for a holistic approach to soothing sensitive teeth, there are several different natural remedies you can try.
We’ve talked about a few of these remedies before:
However, clove oil is one of the best natural remedies for sensitive teeth.
How to Use Clove Oil for Sensitive Teeth
Clove oil is a natural pain reliever with antibacterial properties. Not only will it soothe sensitivity, it will also kill germs. It even helps fight cavities! However, as an essential oil it is extremely strong, and it needs to be diluted with a “carrier oil” like coconut oil before you can use it safely.
If you have sensitive teeth, try adding 1 drop of clove oil to 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Swish the oil around in your mouth for 10-15 minutes, then spit it out into the trash. Never swallow clove oil!
Tips for Preventing Tooth Sensitivity
You can prevent sensitivity and enamel damage by making a few conscious choices. Here’s what to do to soothe sensitive teeth.
- Drink more water and chew sugar-free gum to prevent dry mouth.
- Avoid sugary and acidic foods or beverages, like citrus fruits or coffee.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and wait to brush until 30 minutes after eating or drinking anything but water.
- Floss daily to prevent gingivitis and gum recession.
- Get tested for vitamin deficiencies.
- Use a tooth powder with minerals that help rebuild tooth enamel.
- Try natural remedies like oil pulling or a saltwater rinse.
You should also see a dental hygienist for a cleaning at least once every six months. Dental cleanings remove the plaque and tartar buildup that causes acid attacks and enamel erosion. If you have gingivitis, your hygienist can give you pain-free laser therapy to remove infected tissue and promote healing.
