09 Mar Safe Dental Care During Pregnancy: Holistic Tips for Moms-to-Be
It’s no secret that pregnancy affects your entire body, including your teeth and gums. From morning sickness to shifting hormones, pregnancy affects your oral health from day one until delivery. Gingivitis, dry mouth, enamel erosion, and loose teeth are all common complaints during pregnancy. But you can protect yourself and your growing baby by choosing holistic alternatives.
Why Dental Health Matters During Pregnancy
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause all sorts of dental health problems. For instance, the hormone “relaxin” can literally relax your gums and make your teeth feel loose. Your risk of cavities also increases because of hormonal changes that make your saliva more acidic.
Pregnancy gingivitis is also very common, affecting 3 out of 4 pregnant women. Because your blood volume increases, it can make your gums tender and swollen, and more vulnerable to infections. It’s important to get treatment for gingivitis during pregnancy, because periodontitis (gum disease) increases the risk of premature birth.
Dental Care During Pregnancy: What’s Safe, and What’s Not?
It is important to get any urgent dental work you need, even during pregnancy, as untreated dental issues can lead to serious complications. Always inform the dental team that you’re a mother-to-be, so they can take the appropriate precautions.
Dental cleanings and routine exams are safe during pregnancy. So are restorations like fillings and crowns, and gum disease treatments like laser therapy or scaling and planing. Local anesthetics like lidocaine are also safe for pregnant women. But cosmetic dentistry and more invasive procedures will have to wait until after you give birth.
If you need x-rays during your dental visit, we can perform them safely with proper shielding to protect you. But if you choose not to get x-rays, we understand. We’ll leave that decision up to you.
Holistic Alternatives for Pregnant Moms
Many expectant mothers seek more natural alternatives during pregnancy, because they want to be careful about what they put in or on their bodies. If you haven’t started reading the labels on your personal care products yet, you might want to start.
Unfortunately, many conventional dental products contain toxic ingredients like triclosan and parabens, which are endocrine disruptors. Check the ingredients in your dental products to make sure they’re safe to use.
Since fluoride is a mild neurotoxin, we recommend brushing with a fluoride-free toothpaste. Alternatives like hydroxyapatite are much safer during pregnancy.
And instead of conventional mouthwash, try using an herbal rinse with chamomile, calendula, or Himalayan pink salt instead. The herbs and salt will help soothe inflamed gums and fight bacteria. You can make your own salt rinse by dissolving ¼ teaspoon of pink salt in 4 ounces of warm water.
Holistic Dental Tips for Pregnancy
- Make sure you’re eating healthy foods like cheese and yogurt, crunchy vegetables, fresh fruits, and nuts. These foods will support good oral health and your baby’s development as well.
- Don’t forget to take your prenatal vitamins. Some of the most important nutrients include calcium, magnesium, and vitamin C. Adding more probiotics to your diet can help you keep your gums healthy, too. And make sure to get a little sunshine every day, so your body can synthesize enough Vitamin D.
- Rinse your mouth with water every morning to combat the effects of morning sickness. You could also use a baking soda solution (drink 1 teaspoon in a cup of water after vomiting. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to avoid damaging your tooth enamel, as contact with stomach acid makes it temporarily weak.
- To combat dry mouth, drink plenty of water. You can also chew sugar-free gum with xylitol to neutralize acids and stimulate saliva production.
- Schedule an extra dental checkup! Safe, non-invasive treatments like laser therapy and ozone therapy can stop gingivitis in its tracks.
