20 Oct Why a Misaligned Bite Is More Than a Cosmetic Issue
You’ve been getting these dull headaches almost every morning for months, and no amount of coffee or ibuprofen seems to touch them. Maybe your jaw clicks when you chew, or you’ve noticed one of your back teeth looks a little more worn down than the others.
It turns out these seemingly unrelated symptoms could all come down to one problem: a misaligned bite.
A crooked smile isn’t just a cosmetic issue. Correcting a misalignment can restore full function to your teeth and jaw, prevent enamel wear from teeth grinding, and relieve many types of chronic pain.
What Problems Can a Misaligned Bite Cause?
A misaligned bite or “malocclusion” happens when your upper and lower sets of teeth don’t meet the way they’re supposed to. That means every bite you take puts unnecessary force on one area, instead of distributing it evenly across your entire mouth. Some teeth absorb far more pressure than they should, while others barely make any contact.
Over months and years, that imbalance can lead to a surprising range of problems. Tension headaches, jaw pain, tooth decay, and receding gums are common. A bad bite can even affect nutrition and sleep as chewing becomes harder and more uncomfortable. That’s a much bigger ripple effect than most people expect from a few crooked teeth.
Enamel Wear, Tooth Fractures, and Receding Gums
An uneven bite tends to wear down the enamel fairly quickly in the teeth that get the most contact. This makes them more vulnerable to cavities and decay. Tooth fractures are also common, because as strong as your teeth are, they can still chip or crack when they’re under pressure they weren’t designed to bear. That pressure can even cause gum recession in the areas absorbing the most force.
Jaw Pain, Headaches, and TMJ Disorders
Another common issue with a misaligned bite is added strain on the jaw joint, which can cause TMJ disorders.
When your jaw muscles have to work overtime whenever you chew, talk, or even just open your mouth, that constant extra effort can start to show up as jaw pain. Or you might notice clicking and popping sounds when you open and close your mouth. It can also trigger the kind of tension headaches that seem to come out of nowhere, or that you wake up with in the morning.
TMJ disorders are quite common. An estimated 5 to 10 percent of the U.S. population deals with some form of TMD, and a misaligned bite is frequently part of the puzzle.
Should You Correct a Misaligned Bite?
Not every bite issue demands immediate treatment, but if you’re dealing with frequent jaw pain or it seems like your teeth are shifting, it’s worth a consult. Aligning your teeth can boost your confidence, help prevent cavities, and relieve symptoms like jaw pain and tension headaches.
Invisalign can correct many types of alignment issues, from overbites and underbites, to crooked teeth and gaps. And don’t assume that clear aligners are only for teens or young adults. Invisalign works just as well at age 44 as it does at age 24.
